Alumni Meeting Notes 5/17/16
Our May meeting was attended both in person and through Hangouts and attendees welcomed our first guest speaker Spencer Watson, Communications Director for the EAST Initiative who addressed “Social Media and Using it to Promote Alumni”.
Watson discussed the EAST Alumni page on Facebook set up and its current use for Announcements, Events, and Opportunities. Alumni joined the conversation and asked Watson for his ideas on how to promote the page and increase the presence. He replied “without investment to boost posts, the biggest thing that can be done is organic growth (“like” the page and “share” items/events). We want to use social media to get people to ‘come back to us’ (eastinitiative.org and eastalumni.org) and engage with the page through shares and comments.” The conversations turned to content and the suggestion was made to share Alumni project and information or perhaps create a monthly Spotlight of an Alumni and/or the next month’s Guest Speaker. With some promotion/pushing traffic to the Alumni page by current active Alumni reaching out to their friends and peers for promotion and participation the page can grow into a true resource for news and information. Watson wants to be accessible to Alumni and would love for everyone to contact him (firstname.lastname@example.org) with ideas and bits of news to share.
Next month our guest speaker will be David Moody of Jacksson David, LLC who will address “Using EAST Skills in Workplace Interactions”. Moody is the Founder of Jacksson David and StartupDad, interim COO for Innovis Labs, and a CEO Forum leader. As a consultant focused on startup and technology businesses, he has worked with a variety companies to commercialize products and services in the areas of nanotechnology, biotechnology, medical devices, software as a service, online retail, and energy technology. Following his passion for entrepreneurship and education, David currently serves on the boards of the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub and the EAST Initiative, nonprofits dedicated to education, technology training and supporting startup companies. He volunteers with a variety of nonprofits, supports Startup Weekend, G60 Pitch Contest, Barcamp, Hack-A-Thons and other entrepreneurial events, and the ARK Challenge business accelerator.
During the regular business portion of the meeting, Alumni were asked for suggestions in naming our future program mentoring pairing program. Suggestions should be emailed to email@example.com to be considered during the June meeting when an official name will be chosen. Previous suggestions include: Mentoring Moment and Ask Alumni.
Marisa Damm announced our first colonizing meeting (July 19) will be held in Fayetteville in the CAST room at U of A. Following the meeting, a local Alumni will be asked to organize/lead future meetings in conjunction with our regular time/date. Hangouts will be available for those who are not able to travel. An additional colonizing meeting will be held in January at SAU Tech (Camden) and in April at ASU (Jonesboro). In addition, Alumni will be provided with EAST Night Out details for programs near their current location during the month of October.
Don’t forget to attend our EAST Alumni Night with the Travs on Saturday, June 4! This is our 1st ever Alumni event and we want to have a great showing.
